This is a change from The Barber of Seville. Carter’s source does not use a Pantaloon, but instead employs another stock type from the Commedia in his place: Il Dottore Baloardo or Balanzone (Rossini uses the name Bartolo). This character is (obviously) a doctor, not a wealthy merchant or landowner, and comedy is generated through his excessive erudition and pedantry. The change probably indicates that Carte
